Your questions answered

Electric scooter insurance: frequently asked questions

Is electric scooter insurance compulsory in Spain?
Yes. From 2 January 2026, Law 5/2025 requires personal light vehicles to have their own third-party liability insurance. The requirement has been enforceable since the DGT register opened on 30 January 2026. The statutory minimum limits are €6,450,000 for personal injury and €1,300,000 for property damage. These differ from the higher limits required for cars.
What happens if I have an accident without insurance?
Spain’s Consorcio de Compensación de Seguros compensates the injured party for injuries requiring healthcare or death, but not property damage under this arrangement, and then claims the full amount back from you. You may also face a penalty for riding without compulsory insurance.
Can a minor ride the scooter?
The policy covers the insured person and authorised riders aged 16 or over. The policyholder must be an adult. Riders under 16 are not covered, as confirmed by the insurer. If the main rider is aged 16 to 17, contact us before buying so we can advise you.
Which scooters can I insure?
Electric scooters registered with Spain’s DGT, with a registration number in the format M1234BBC. Choose the brand and model from the insurer’s catalogue, which includes more than 70 manufacturers.
How do Basic, Plus and Premium differ?
Basic covers rider personal accident, third-party liability and legal defence. Plus adds scooter theft. Premium also adds scooter damage, hospitalisation and reconstructive surgery. Plus and Premium can only be purchased within 30 days of buying the scooter; after that, only Basic is available. See our guide to electric scooter insurance (in Spanish) for details.
What third-party liability cover is included?
The policy covers liability for harm caused to other people with the scooter, up to €7,750,000, and includes claims recovery and legal defence.
How do I pay and what documents will I receive?
Pay the full first annual premium by card and provide your Spanish IBAN for renewals; both are required. After payment, the policy may take a few minutes. We send the policy and IPID by email. Divina Seguros supplies its documents in Spanish.
What do I need to use the English online form?
You must be aged 18 or over and have a valid NIE, an address in Spain and a Spanish bank account. The scooter must have its DGT registration number. This online form does not accept passports.
